Now It's a Social Event
04/03/10 19:41
One of the best things you can do to get over a roadblock is to workout with a friend. I found a great climbing partner at the gym. I slacked on going Tuesday night (one of my regular climbing nights) and he got my butt to the gym on Wednesday instead. Together, we made a plan to climb around some birthday festivities going on this weekend to get in the goal of 3x per week. It only took the slightest nudge to get me on board, though I’m not sure I would have done it on my own. Here’s to supportive friends.
The fun thing is that once I’ve attracted this one new climbing partner, we may have two more who are excited about joining us. Now it’s a social event. How fun is that?!

My Little Secret

Sometimes fitness professionals and other leaders need most what they teach to their clients. Reignite Your Spark comes from me, a recovering perfectionist, someone who easily gravitates to making things harder than they need to be, and someone who could use some more balloons and Play-Doh in her life. Not as the instructor of Recess, but as the participant!
As I've returned to a field I feel passionate about, I've lost my own workouts in the day to day running of the business, marketing, caring for my clients, and wearing 10 hats of my own. I've been living in the land of 'usta' just like many of you. I usta rollerblade 80 miles a week in college. I usta climb 4 days a week a couple years ago. I usta be in the yoga studio 4-5 times a week until sidelined by an injury.
Well guess what? Working out makes me feel happy and alive. For the sake of myself, and for the sake of my clients, I'm committing to my joyful routine once again. My injury is healed, I have a flexible schedule, and there are no more excuses! Follow me on Twitter and on my blog as I brush my ego aside, get back in the game, and go through the ups and downs of working new activities into my life.
For once you get to be the trainer and say, hey did you climb three times last week? How did yoga go?

Feel Your Heart Warm

I’m reminded time and time again that the two things that really matter in life are kindness to others and love. It’s so incredible how you can change someone’s day by telling them you like their haircut instead of keeping it to yourself, surprising a friend with their favorite coffee, or mindfully giving someone the attentive space to vent about their day.
The one often overlooked form of kindness is kindness to ourselves. Being kind to ourselves helps us to be well-balanced, fun to be around, and can give others permission to stop working so hard. Consider the following:
1. Take just a 5 minute break to do nothing but breathe. When you notice that your mind has wandered, kindly start breathing again. Try to enjoy the break, even though it may be really hard, and set a timer for yourself so you’re not focused on the clock.
2. Eat foods that bring you joy and happen to be brightly colored and full of nutrition. You know this gives your body the tools it needs to keep you alert, mentally well, and healthy. My recommendation is that you eat these foods with the idea that you’re being kind to yourself, rather than “being good today.” Keep in mind, you can add these foods gradually, so your body doesn’t freak out and crave the entire half gallon of ice cream in the freezer. The foods you eat are your choice, and you can balance the nutrition however works best for you.
3. Think of cardio as a way to run your insides through the carwash and let some of the toxins run down the ‘drain.’ Again, shift your focus from “this is boring, when am I done?” to “hmm, my heart rate is up, and it’s as if there are a ton of little brushes giving things a cleaning - what a nice thing to do for myself.” You know your favorite music or a good workout buddy can help.
Shift the internal dialogue, give a compliment, and feel your heart warm. Happy Holidays!
